Hey Neda, I'm not sure how Christians do it, but I moved the blog and lost most of the links and pictures. For the longest time, I thought about just removing the whole site, but thought better of it and I'm slowly tring to get it back up and running. Last week, I was working on getting the time line linked up again, but I'm still running into issues.

@David
I agree with allowing the Spirit to guide us. I once heard that you can't help but judge. You need to have some basis on which to start a conversation after all. But he also added that leaving them with that judgment is where we fail badly, so we need to start that conversation to move them out of that box that we initially placed them in.

I think that most people are prone to judge others they meet for the first time by external appearance, such as clothing, hair style, etc. My mom tends to be very critical of people who wear casual dress for what she considers to be formal occasions. It's important for followers of Christ to let the Holy Spirit guide us in how we interact with newcomers.

@Ming

But do you think it's because people at the church are not friendly, or is it because it was Easter, and they were much more concerned about trying to get people seated and the service flowing smoothly?

Of course, this doesn't excuse the treatment, and this just highlights my concern of what is considered important at church, people versus service, but I sometimes find myself berating people and forgetting that some of them are good people, who still deserve the berating, but not the attitude that I give them with the berates.

Sucks that BAD church etiquette exists in Tennessee too. One of my major major pet peeves is really poor "greeting and ushering and welcoming" in church. Sory Rich that that happened with you. Always think about James chapter 2 (Richman/Poorman) and how we, as members of a church, should treat everyone through the door as a "richman"... well, except for the Pharisee scum.

Kudos to exposing the epic-ness of what Jesus asks of us. Great thoughts about social justice. Side note: maybe living more like Christ is a start... so cliche... rich young ruler ultimatum?

It might be enlightening to have some kind of forum in which non-Christians would be allowed to participate and share their views. I think people in Hawaii are generally a little bit more tolerant of non-Christians since some of us don't come from a traditional Christian background.
If some Christian group were to organize such a forum, I believe that it would be important to avoid confrontational situations. Also, I wonder if non-Christians would feel comfortable taking part in a forum held in a church building. Perhaps a neutral location would be better.
In any case, we Christians should try with the help of God's Holy Spirit to respect those of various beliefs even though we may disagree with some of their views. I went to central India in 1999 with a YWAM outreach group and spent 1 month there. I was told by local Christians that Hindus belonging to extremist groups have considerable disdain towards Muslims and Christians and that violent acts were committed in the past towards them. As John wrote, "If someone says he loves God but hates his brother, he is a liar."
