Polling on comments

Previously, this site was set up for each person to log on in order to comment. But I have found that there is a very strong aversion to registering when someone is deciding to post comments to this blog. Some of the people find that registering is just to elitist, which is why they then close the window and move on rather than leave a comment, while others just find it too time consuming, even though the registration procedure should not take more than 30 seconds in most cases.

The interesting thing for me is that with online forums, at least all the ones I have seen, you have to register in order to comment. When I first started out this blog, I had hoped that it would create a sense of belonging. I’d also hope that it would increase the signal-to-noise ratio of those comments, which it has, but then there isn’t much of either.

So, what should I do? Right now, I have opened up the comments to where you have to enter a name and email in order to post a comment. But the obvious weakness to this is that either of the requirements that is being supplied need NOT be correct.

Now, I just found a new toy, WP-Polls, an AJAX poll system made for the WordPress blog, that I just want to play with right now.

Since we are a community, I do want to hear your voices regarding this issue. So cast your vote, and expand it via the comments, if you like, and I’ll modify the web site to your requests.

RSS Feed and other updates

I wanted to let everyone know about a couple of changes to the site.

The first change deals with moving from the WordPress Feed to Feedburner. Don’t know what a feed is? Here is a video that explains what it is.

And here is rss is, in a nutshell:

You Feed Iconmay recognize the universal feed icon or these “chicklets” from your favorite Web sites, blogs and podcasts. These icons represent content in any format — text, audio or video — to which you can subscribe and read/watch/listen using a feed reader.
From Feedburner 101

The main reason for this change is that it is now easier for more readers to subscribe. Now Email, MyYahoo, Bloglines, Newsgator and more are all options. It is much more friendlier than WordPress “subscribe to this blog’s feed” link with a whole bunch of XML behind it.

The minor reason is that it is a web 2.0 application, and I’m a sucker for new stuff that might be cool;-)

The other change was to update the about us page to give proper credit to John Perez’s idea for part of our name, BASIC. We got the name through Lisa who in turn got the idea from John. I love this part, according to John, he came up with the idea while in the shower. Yes folks, don’t ever mock what comes out of the bathroom;-)

Thanks for the name John.
