Polling on comments
Previously, this site was set up for each person to log on in order to comment. But I have found that there is a very strong aversion to registering when someone is deciding to post comments to this blog. Some of the people find that registering is just to elitist, which is why they then close the window and move on rather than leave a comment, while others just find it too time consuming, even though the registration procedure should not take more than 30 seconds in most cases.
The interesting thing for me is that with online forums, at least all the ones I have seen, you have to register in order to comment. When I first started out this blog, I had hoped that it would create a sense of belonging. I’d also hope that it would increase the signal-to-noise ratio of those comments, which it has, but then there isn’t much of either.
So, what should I do? Right now, I have opened up the comments to where you have to enter a name and email in order to post a comment. But the obvious weakness to this is that either of the requirements that is being supplied need NOT be correct.
Now, I just found a new toy, WP-Polls, an AJAX poll system made for the WordPress blog, that I just want to play with right now.
Since we are a community, I do want to hear your voices regarding this issue. So cast your vote, and expand it via the comments, if you like, and I’ll modify the web site to your requests.
